Our Michigan State University Spartan Stadium Series Baseball Story & Inspiration:
Start here! Spartan Stadium (previously College Field, Macklin Field, and Macklin Stadium) was built in 1923 in East Lansing, Michigan, and dubbed "The Woodshed". It is the home field of the Michigan State University Spartans and primarily utilized for football. The Stadium's capacity increased from 72,027 to 75,005 after adding premium boxes and Club seating in 2004–2005—though it had previously seated more than 80,000 fans—making it the Big Ten's sixth largest Stadium. Wow!
The Stadium was called Macklin Field in honor of the previous coach John Macklin, who put Michigan State football on the map with a 29–5 record from 1911 to 1915, including victories over Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, and Wisconsin. We thank you, John, for giving birth to Michigan State football.
Decade time. Michigan State enlarged the stadium capacity to 51,000 after joining the Big Ten in 1948. In 1956, 9,000 seats were organized when Spartan football gained national notoriety under Clarence "Biggie" Munn and Hugh "Duffy" Daugherty. The east and west sides were double-decked the following season, bringing the total capacity to 76,000. Spartan Stadium gives its current name the following season. Wow! That is enormous.
Advantage of being on home turf. The Spartans had won 15 straight games in Spartan Stadium from the start of the 2012 season until their game against Notre Dame—the program's longest home stretch since winning 19 straight from 1950 to 1953. In back-to-back seasons (2010 and 2011), Michigan State was unbeaten at home, including big wins over Wisconsin, Michigan, and Notre Dame, marking the first flawless home seasons since 1955–56. Yahoo! Awesome games, Spartans.
